The Calming Potential of Your Desk

Welcome to your desk. Whether you’ve thought about it or not, it says a lot about who you are.

Have a pristine looking desk? Your co-workers will likely call you a neat-freak. Is your desk a mess? Your boss is probably second-guessing hiring you based on “potential.” There are some things that you can’t do about your work environment, but here are a few things you can:

Clean it. Your desk is a billboard for how you’re handling projects and stress, and everyone around you can see it. A few quick counts of taking inventory, filing papers away, and creating a to-do list will make your desk more organized and help you plan for the unexpected. A few minutes before or after work can make a big difference in keeping your mind at ease.

Snacks. The day can be unpredictable, and sometimes lunch sprints past you. Make sure to squirrel away some of your favorites – peanuts, pistachios, etc. – because we all know a hungry person is a grumpy person. Save your co-workers the drama, and pack accordingly.

Fill it with things you love. Stress is a powerful emotion that can overcome even the strongest of people. Pictures, awards, heck – even hang up that ribbon you won for coming in 7th place in that cooking competition. Surrounding yourself with these talismans of your past can take you away for a minute to a great memory or feeling, and it’s the stuff that can re-charge your battery. A bad day can turn around anytime with a fond recollection.
